HDFC Bank is India's largest credit card issuer — and unfortunately, also among the most aggressive when it comes to fees and add-on charges. This page documents every hidden or frequently disputed charge on HDFC credit cards, the exact amounts, which RBI rules apply, and how to dispute each one successfully.
HDFC Bank uses a tiered late payment fee structure. For outstanding balances above ₹10,000, the fee is ₹1,300 — one of the highest in Indian banking. The fee schedule:
How to dispute: Call 1800-202-6161 and ask for a "goodwill waiver." First-time late payments are often waived for long-standing customers who ask politely. If declined, email grievanceredressalcell@hdfcbank.com citing RBI Master Direction on Credit Cards 2022, Clause 8 (advance statement requirement).
Credit Shield Plus is HDFC's most frequently disputed charge. It is often activated during the initial card welcome call — with agents enrolling customers into a paid protection plan without obtaining explicit recorded consent. Look for charges labeled "CREDIT SHIELD PLUS", "CARD PROTECT", or "HDFC ERGO" on your statement.
Under RBI Master Direction on Credit Cards 2022, Clause 10, no value-added service can be activated without explicit opt-in consent. "Negative consent" is explicitly prohibited. If you did not actively enroll, you are entitled to a full refund from the date of activation.
How to dispute: Email grievanceredressalcell@hdfcbank.com. Ask the bank to produce your recorded consent. If they cannot, demand a full refund. Escalate to RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in if the bank does not respond in 30 days.
HDFC charges 3.75% per month (45% annually) on revolving balances — one of the highest rates in India. The critical trap: if you pay anything less than the full statement balance, HDFC charges interest on the entire original balance, not just the unpaid portion. This is legal but must be disclosed on every statement.
You can dispute finance charges if: (a) HDFC changed the rate without 30 days' advance notice, or (b) the rate applied differs from what was disclosed in your Key Fact Statement at card issuance.
HDFC offers spend-based annual fee waivers on most cards. If you met the spend threshold and were still charged the fee, this is disputable. Common waiver thresholds:
Request your annual spend summary from HDFC NetBanking and compare against the waiver threshold. If you qualified and were still charged, email with proof — HDFC reverses these regularly.
HDFC charges 2.5% of the amount exceeding your credit limit (minimum ₹500). If you were not aware you had opted into an overlimit facility, this fee is disputable. Per RBI rules, overlimit transactions should be declined by default if you have not explicitly opted in.
HDFC charges 2.5% (minimum ₹500) for credit card cash advances, with interest accruing from day one at 3.75% per month. If your ATM transaction failed but your account was still debited, you are entitled to an immediate full refund plus ₹100/day compensation for delays beyond 5 business days (RBI Payment System Guidelines).
Standard HDFC cards charge 3.5% forex markup (effectively ~4.13% with GST) on all international transactions. HDFC Regalia reduces this to 2%. If you were charged a forex fee on what you believed was an INR transaction, this is disputable — ask for the merchant's original transaction currency.
HDFC-specific tip: HDFC's frontline customer care agents can waive fees up to ₹1,000 instantly. For larger amounts or systematic charges (like Credit Shield), you must escalate to the Grievance Redressal Cell in writing. HDFC is required to respond within 30 days — after which the RBI Ombudsman becomes your strongest lever.
Time limit: Dispute late fees within 30 days for best results. Credit Shield disputes can claim up to 6 months of refunds. Annual fee disputes must be filed before the next billing cycle. Do not wait.
