How to Reverse a Credit Card Late Payment Fee in India

Updated February 2025  •  7 min read  •  By ClaimBack Research Team

You missed a payment by a day. Or your bank's portal was slow. Or the payment cleared — but after the technical cutoff. Now there's a ₹500 to ₹1,300 late fee on your statement. Here's the truth: banks waive these fees far more often than they admit — and you have the law on your side.

When Are You Entitled to a Reversal?

Not every late fee can be disputed — but many can. You have a strong case in these situations:

RBI Rule (Master Direction on Credit Cards, 2022 — Clause 8): Credit card issuers must send a statement at least 14 days before the payment due date and must provide multiple payment channels. Failure to do either weakens the bank's position in any dispute.

Step-by-Step: How to Get Your Late Fee Reversed

1

Call Customer Care First (5 Minutes)

Call the credit card helpline and politely say: "I'd like to request a goodwill waiver of the late payment fee on my account. This is my first late payment and I'd like this reversed." Most frontline agents have authority to waive fees up to ₹1,000 for customers with a clean payment history. Note the complaint/reference number.

2

If Call Fails — Send a Written Dispute (10 Minutes)

Email the bank's credit card grievance address. Use the template below. A written complaint creates a paper trail and triggers a mandatory 30-day response window under RBI guidelines.

3

Escalate to Nodal Officer (If No Response in 7 Days)

Every bank must publish a Nodal Officer contact on their website. Find your bank's Nodal Officer and send the same email. This escalates the priority of your complaint internally.

4

File RBI Ombudsman Complaint (After 30 Days)

If the bank does not resolve within 30 days or gives an unsatisfactory response, file a complaint at cms.rbi.org.in. It is free, takes 15 minutes, and banks respond quickly once the Ombudsman gets involved.

Email Template — Late Fee Reversal Request

Copy and customise this template. The key is citing the RBI rule — banks take written, cited complaints far more seriously than verbal requests.

Dear Credit Card Grievance Officer, I am writing to formally request a reversal of the late payment fee of Rs. [AMOUNT] charged to my credit card account [LAST 4 DIGITS] on [DATE OF CHARGE]. The payment of Rs. [AMOUNT] was made on [DATE] via [PAYMENT METHOD — UPI/NEFT/Net Banking]. [If applicable: This was my first instance of a late payment in X years of holding this card.] I would like to draw your attention to the RBI Master Direction on Credit Cards (2022), Clause 8, which requires issuers to provide adequate advance notice of payment due dates. [If applicable: I did not receive any SMS or email reminder before the due date.] I request that you: 1. Reverse the late payment fee of Rs. [AMOUNT] as a goodwill gesture. 2. Confirm the reversal in writing within 7 working days. If this matter is not resolved within 30 days, I will escalate my complaint to the RBI Banking Ombudsman under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2021. Yours sincerely, [Your Full Name] [Credit Card Number — Last 4 digits only] [Registered Mobile Number] [Date]

What If the Bank Refuses?

Banks sometimes reject first-level complaints hoping customers will give up. Do not. The RBI Banking Ombudsman resolves 80%+ of legitimate complaints in customers' favour — and banks know this. Filing at cms.rbi.org.in takes 15 minutes and is completely free.

Do not ignore the late fee: Unpaid late fees attract finance charges at 36–45% annually on top of the penalty. Even if you are disputing, pay the fee first — then claim the refund. This protects your credit score while your dispute is being resolved.
